Capital University Announces New Dean of the School of Nursing

COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 29, 2024 – Capital University today announced the appointment of Heather Janiszewski Goodin, Ph.D., R.N., AHN-BC, CPN as dean of the School of Nursing. Goodin is a tenured professor of Nursing and has served on the faculty at Capital University since 1995. She has been interim dean of the School of Nursing since August 2023.

Goodin led the development of new curriculum and supported student scholarship as associate dean of the Graduate Nursing Program from 2015-2023. As interim dean, she has been instrumental in student recruitment and enrollment for the School of Nursing.

“Over the past year, Heather has developed innovative approaches to program revision and enhancement, in addition to rethinking the recruitment of students into the School of Nursing,” said Capital University Provost Jody Fournier. “We are looking forward to Heather’s continued leadership and innovation in this role.”

Originally from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, Goodin earned her undergraduate degree in Nursing from Laurentian University in Sudbury. She worked as a registered nurse on a pediatric unit at Laurentian University before moving to North Carolina to work as a pediatric nurse at University of North Carolina Hospitals. She then earned her Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in nursing education at Western University in London, Ontario.

Goodin began her career as an educator at Capital University while simultaneously earning a Ph.D. with a focus in Workforce Development and Education at The Ohio State University. While at Capital, she has shared her passion for holistic education through participation in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and student mentoring programs.

“To prepare the next generation of holistic nurse leaders, we need to intentionally create an environment that emphasizes wellness/self-care, inclusion, connection, and support of holistic teaching/learning experiences” said Goodin.

Goodin was awarded a HRSA Nurse Faculty Loan Grant in 2016, and the Winters Endowed Professorship in Nursing Program in 2018. She has also maintained her professional nursing practice at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for almost 30 years. She also remains an active member of the American Holistic Nurse Association and is passionate about the importance of holism in nursing education.
