Capital University Announces Master of Social Work Program

COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 31, 2024 – Capital University has begun accepting applications for its new Master of Social Work degree program. It will be one of the few programs in Ohio to offer an MSW degree in Advanced Social Work Practice, which allows graduates to practice in any field of social work.

Taught in a hybrid format of evening and Saturday classes with field experiences and opportunities for research and professional development, Capital’s new MSW program, offers two paths:

  • The Two-Year MSW includes a year of instruction focused on foundational generalist social work and a year of advanced social work practice. The two-year program is for students who have a bachelor’s degree in a field outside of social work. The first cohort of students will begin in fall 2024.
  • The Advanced Standing (ASAP) one-year MSW is a three-semester program designed for students who have earned a bachelor’s degree in social work and aspire to participate in advanced practice social work careers. The first cohort of students will begin in summer 2025.

In the 50+ years it has prepared undergraduate social work majors, Capital has earned a reputation for excellence in preparing social workers to empower change and inspire communities.

“Social workers exist in every institution. We want our graduates to have a seat at the table, a voice in the community, and the confidence to offer new perspectives for how to solve problems as well as engage in prevention,” said Renda Ross, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of Capital University’s Social Work program.

“Social work is a marketable degree and our MSW program provides a rich curriculum in advanced practice, including field education to garner expertise in their chosen area of practice,” Ross said. “We provide opportunities for research and professional development that enables them to network and navigate career choices.”
